About this Issue

The Mighty World of Marvel Vol. 2 #7 (December 1983) marks the first appearance of Meggan — the empathic metamorph who would go on to become a founding member of Excalibur and Captain Britain's eventual wife — making it the debut of one of Marvel UK's most enduring original characters. The issue simultaneously serves as the bridgehead issue that absorbed The Daredevils into MWOM, transplanting Alan Moore and Alan Davis's Jaspers' Warp Captain Britain storyline into a new home and ensuring that one of the most politically charged superhero narratives of its era could reach its conclusion. The Captain Britain story presented here — two prisoners, one of them the newly introduced Meggan, trading whispered legends of the hero while interned in a super-being concentration camp under Sir James Jaspers' authoritarian regime — stands as one of Alan Moore's most quietly harrowing single-chapter scripts, using hope and rumor as narrative devices to illustrate totalitarianism's cost. The issue also gave British readers their first domestic-market exposure to the Claremont–Miller Wolverine limited series, pairing two landmark Marvel stories in a single anthology package that would have been otherwise difficult to find in the UK.

In "Loss," Alan Moore and Alan Davis deliver a poignant moment in the midst of escalating tension, as two young girls in hiding share quiet, heartfelt thoughts about Captain Britain while the world around them grows darker. This powerful story, part of Marvel UK’s The Mighty World of Marvel, captures a rare, intimate glimpse of heroism and memory during a time of fear and persecution.

History

When The Daredevils was cancelled after eleven issues, Marvel UK editor Bernie Jaye merged it into the relaunched Mighty World of Marvel Vol. 2, which had debuted in June 1983 as a monthly with card covers and a premium price point. Issue #7 (December 1983) was the direct product of that merger: it absorbed the Captain Britain strip and the Night Raven text feature wholesale from The Daredevils, picking up the continuity precisely from The Daredevils #11 without interruption. The Captain Britain story was written by Alan Moore with art by Alan Davis — the same creative team that had been developing the Jaspers' Warp arc through the preceding magazine — and it introduced Meggan in a brief but indelible sequence that Davis and Moore had conceived as part of their broader Jaspers dystopia. The Wolverine reprint content came from the American limited series Wolverine #3 (Nov. 1982), scripted by Chris Claremont with art by Frank Miller and inks by Josef Rubinstein, giving the UK anthology a prestigious American co-feature; the physical production of the issue used a mixed page format, with colour sections transitioning to tinted and then black-and-white pages.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Meggan (Meggan Puceanu), created by writer Alan Moore and artist Alan Davis; she was introduced as a prisoner in Sir James Jaspers' internment camp sharing a cell with a girl named Sue Parsons during the Jaspers' Warp storyline.
  • The Captain Britain strip continues directly from The Daredevils #11 — this is the first issue of MWOM Vol. 2 to carry that strip, following The Daredevils' cancellation and merger into MWOM.
  • The Wolverine content is a partial reprint of Wolverine (1982 limited series) #3, scripted by Chris Claremont with pencils by Frank Miller and inks by Josef Rubinstein — part of the character's first-ever solo limited series, set in Japan and featuring Lord Shingen Harada, Mariko Yashida, and Yukio.
  • The issue also includes a Night Raven text story ('Quiet Town — episode 2'), continuing the pulp prose feature that migrated over from The Daredevils.
  • The Captain Britain story is set against the backdrop of the Jaspers' Warp — a dystopian alternate Britain in which Sir James Jaspers has ordered the internment of all super-powered individuals — with Sir James Jaspers referenced throughout via propaganda imagery.
  • Cover date: December 1983; published by Marvel Comics Ltd. (Marvel UK); edited by Bernie Jaye.
  • The Captain Britain story from this issue has been reprinted in X-Men Archives Featuring Captain Britain #6 (Dec. 1995), Captain Britain by Alan Moore & Alan Davis Omnibus (2009), the Excalibur Epic Collection Vol. 1 (2017), and the Captain Britain Omnibus (2021), among other collected editions.
  • Meggan's first American appearance came later, in New Mutants Annual #2 (1986); her UK debut in this issue predates that by nearly three years.
