“War Below the Waves!”

This August 1973 issue throws the Defenders headlong into an undersea clash with the Atlantean warlord Attuma and his warriors, all of it captured in a wonderfully chaotic cover by John Romita. The Hulk, Namor, the Valkyrie, and a blasting Hawkeye — called out as a guest-star — are fully engaged in the melee, while the portrait icons of the Hulk, Doctor Strange, and Namor along the left edge remind you just what an unlikely team this is. "War…Beneath the Waves!" promises exactly the kind of sprawling, anything-goes battle that made the early Defenders run such a treat.
