With a title like "Manslaughter!" and a cover by Kevin Nowlan that absolutely commands attention, this 1984 Marvel issue makes a striking statement. A wild-eyed figure in blue lunges triumphantly over a pile of fallen teammates — Angel's great white wings splayed beneath him, while two blonde women lie scattered across the shadowy foreground — the whole image radiating barely-contained fury against a stark black background. Peter B. Gillis and Don Perlin were clearly building toward something intense with the New Defenders, and this cover promises the team is in serious trouble.
