“Salesman Sam Just Lost Another Sale”

In "Salesman Sam Just Lost Another Sale," a 1938 Dell comic, writer and artist Paul Jepsen crafts a tale of desperation and mystery, following Rod Rian and his band as they struggle to survive on the Island of the Living Dead. With only water, food, and shelter in sight, they face a monstrous beast and a haunting pond where a living skeleton lies in wait—only to see one of their own transformed by its waters. The story unfolds with eerie tension, blending survival instincts and surreal encounters, all rendered in Jepsen’s distinctive style, while Victor Pazmiño’s cover captures the unsettling atmosphere with striking detail.

Rod Rian leads Taro and his men in search of water, food and shelter on the Island of the Living Dead. Rod and Karin are attacked by a "huge beast", but the Unicors put the creature to rout. They come upon a pond of water where a "living-skeleton" is resting. Rod fights off the skeleton. One of the Unicor solders rushes to the water and drinks it, and it turns him into a living skeleton. Rod suggests it's only an illusion, and the Unicor agrees as he can feel his flesh and skin. Back on Earth, Elmus discusses with Chan the possibility of their combined forces eliminating the Mephisian pirates.
