“The Pathway of Doom...”

Jim Aparo's cover for this September 1979 issue pulls you right into the action — Batman and Metamorpho, the Element Man, are caught mid-leap inside a sniper's crosshairs, while armed gunmen in fezzes open fire with energy weapons all around them. The cover copy promises "two heroes cross the world on a deadly manhunt," and the looming question — "But will a sniper's bullet mean their doom?" — gives the whole scene a genuine sense of stakes. It's a fine example of the Brave and the Bold's winning formula: an unlikely but compelling team-up rendered with Aparo's confident, kinetic linework.
