About this Collection

This volume collects several issues of the Batman Chronicles series, reprinting classic Batman stories from the Golden Age of comics. It features a selection of tales originally published in the 1940s, showcasing the early adventures of the Dark Knight and his allies. The collection offers a glimpse into the formative years of the Batman mythos under DC Comics' original creative teams.

In "The Joker Reforms!", the Penguin, dismissed by Gotham’s prison warden as lacking the brilliance of villains like the Scarecrow and the Joker, sets out to prove otherwise—pushing Batman and Robin to confront a criminal mastermind who’s redefining his own legacy. Written by Don Cameron and illustrated by Jack Burnley with inks by Ray Burnley, this 2010 installment of The Batman Chronicles features a sharp, character-driven thriller grounded in Gotham’s criminal psyche. The cover by Jerry Robinson and Rodney Ramos captures the tension with a striking, noir-inspired portrait of the Penguin in a moment of quiet determination.

The Penguin attends a lecture by Gotham City's prison Warden Keyes, who talks about the city's most dangerous villains: the Scarecrow, the Joker and the Cat-Woman...but fails to list him. When asked about the Penguin, Keyes says that he hasn't the genius or inventiveness of the others. Penguin decides to correct that assumption, and Batman and Robin must stop him in that attempt.
