“This Beachhead Earth [Part One]”

The tagline says it all — "The Mighty Avengers battle the Fabulous F.F.... or do they??" — and the cover delivers on that tantalizing question with a full-on clash between Marvel's two greatest super-teams. Thor hammer raised and Captain America shield-forward charge at the Thing and the Human Torch, with Iron Man streaking in from above, Mr. Fantastic coiling in from the left, and the Vision looking on grimly in the background — it's a breathtaking collision rendered with tremendous energy by cover artists Neal Adams and Marie Severin, inked by Tom Palmer. Roy Thomas scripting and Neal Adams on interior art made this November 1971 installment one of the most anticipated chapters of an already gripping storyline.
