Issue #93 arrived in August 1971 as part of a bold, company-wide experiment: Marvel simultaneously expanded a line of flagship titles to a 48-page (52 with covers) format at a new 25-cent price point, giving Roy Thomas and incoming penciller Neal Adams an unusually generous 34 pages to fill — more than double a standard issue's story page count. Both Thomas and Adams have publicly claimed substantial creative contribution to the plotting of their collaborative issues, a dispute that became notably contentious in public forums around the 2019 Captain Marvel film; the most widely cited neutral assessment is that both men genuinely shaped the story's direction, even though the script credit belongs to Thomas. Adams came to the title fresh off his celebrated work on X-Men and DC's Batman, bringing a more fluid, cinematically dynamic anatomy to Marvel's house style that contemporaries and later critics described as a paradigm shift away from the dominant Kirby-influenced approach.
