Avengers #92 is the fourth chapter of the landmark Kree-Skrull War saga, a nine-part storyline that Roy Thomas would later describe as the most ambitious story Marvel had yet attempted in a single title. The issue debuts H. Warren Craddock — a Skrull infiltrator posing as the demagogic head of the newly formed Alien Activities Commission — whose character is a pointed allegorical stand-in for Senator Joseph McCarthy, making the arc one of the earliest sustained political allegories in mainstream superhero comics. The issue also features brief cameos of numerous Golden Age heroes from Rick Jones's imagination (including non-Marvel properties such as the Green Lama, the Fighting Yank, and the Heap), an early sign of Roy Thomas's deep commitment to integrating comics history into current continuity. The issue was written by Roy Thomas with interior art by Sal Buscema (pencils) and George Roussos (inks and colors), with letters by Sam Rosen and Stan Lee credited as editor. Neal Adams — who had already collaborated with Thomas on X-Men starting in 1969 — contributed the cover (inked by Tom Palmer), signaling his imminent arrival as interior penciler and co-plotter beginning with issue #93. Thomas has acknowledged that he had no rigid master plan for the Kree-Skrull War, building the political allegory and cosmic scope organically across the nine-issue run. The on-sale date, per Library of Congress records, was July 13, 1971, with a September 1971 cover date.
