Roy Thomas wrote the issue and John Buscema provided pencils, with Tom Palmer on inks and Sam Rosen lettering — the same core creative team steering the Avengers title through its socially ambitious early Bronze Age run. Thomas and Stan Lee had both wanted a Native American hero in the line, but Lee's preference for Western-genre storytelling meant the modern-day Talltrees version was quickly handed off to that context after his Avengers tryout, with a 19th-century iteration (Johnny Wakely) taking over in Marvel Spotlight #1 the following year.
