Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers #9
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis volume of Marvel Masterworks collects The Avengers #68-79, plus the 1971 King-Size Special #2, covering a pivotal era as Roy Thomas and John Buscema steer Earth's Mightiest Heroes through the Kree-Skrull War, the introduction of the Vision, and the return of classic villains like the Enchantress and Executioner. The collection also features the debut of the Black Knight (Dane Whitman) and guest appearances by the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and the Hulk, cementing this run as a cornerstone of Bronze Age Avengers lore.
In "The Coming of Red Wolf," Valkyrie arrives at Avengers HQ with a mission: recruiting Wasp and the Scarlet Witch into her all-female team, the Lady Liberators. With the male Avengers distracted at Tom Fagan’s Halloween parade, the Masters of Evil strike—only to be swiftly defeated by the Lady Liberators, who prove their strength in a battle that exposes a shocking twist. Written by Roy Thomas and brought to life with dynamic art by John Buscema and Tom Palmer, this issue redefines the Avengers’ legacy with a bold, gender-flipped showdown. The cover, also by Buscema and Palmer, captures the moment of confrontation with striking intensity.

Valkyrie shows up at Avengers HQ and convinces Wasp and the Scarlet Witch to join her team of Lady Liberators. With the male members of the Avengers attending Tom Fagan's Halloween parade, the Masters of Evil attack and pummel our heroes. The Lady Liberators show up to save the day and do what their male chauvinist pig counterparts failed to do as they make quick work of the villains. Valkyrie is revealed to be the Enchantress, however, and the lady heroes are forced to defeat their former leader. The gender war rages on.
