Dan Slott conceived the 'Spider-Verse' premise while working on the 2010 video game Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, which used four versions of Spider-Man, prompting him to wonder what a story featuring all of them at once would look like. The idea was held back to make room for Brian Michael Bendis's 2012 Spider-Men crossover before Slott was finally given the green light, pairing him with superstar artist Olivier Coipel — a collaboration Marvel's own solicits emphasized by listing Coipel's high-profile prior credits (Thor, Siege, House of M). The issue shipped with a January 2015 cover date despite going on sale November 5, 2014, under Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso and series editor Nick Lowe, and carried a substantial variant lineup including covers by Gabriele Dell'Otto, Skottie Young, Ryan Stegman, Jeff Wamester, Pasqual Ferry, and Greg Horn. A backup story in the same issue, penciled by Giuseppe Camuncoli, extended the scope of the opening chapter.
