Edge of Spider-Verse #5

History

The issue represents Gerard Way's first-ever work-for-hire assignment at Marvel, written concurrently with the release of his debut solo album Hesitant Alien in September 2014, while he was also developing new Umbrella Academy volumes. Way has described the concept as emerging from a single question he posed to himself about the Spider-Man mythos — what if the radioactive spider bite created a permanent psychic link rather than a momentary origin event — an idea that led him organically to a young girl, a dead father, and a mech suit. Editor Nick Lowe brought Way onto the project, and Way specifically selected artist Jake Wyatt (previously seen on Ms. Marvel and Indestructible Hulk work at Marvel) as the ideal visual collaborator. The issue is the concluding chapter of the five-part Edge of Spider-Verse anthology mini-series, each issue spotlighting a different alternate-universe Spider-hero as a prelude to Dan Slott's main Spider-Verse event.
