The issue arrived on April 30, 2014, as part of Marvel's All-New Marvel NOW! company-wide relaunch wave, slotting directly after Superior Spider-Man's 33-issue run wrapped with the Goblin Nation arc. Dan Slott, who had been the sole writer on the Spider-Man franchise since 2010, continued without interruption, now reunited with his frequent collaborator Humberto Ramos on the lead story. The oversized debut was structured as an anthology, with Slott co-writing backup strips alongside Christos Gage, while Peter David contributed a Spider-Man 2099 story with Will Sliney, and Chris Yost handled a Kaine/Scarlet Spider feature with David Baldeon — each backup continuing into its own spinoff title. Cindy Moon, who received only a brief, mostly obscured cameo in this issue, was deliberately planted by Slott as a slow-burn mystery tied to the upcoming Original Sin crossover event, with her full debut as Silk not arriving until issue #4.
