Writer Dan Slott, who had authored the entire Superior Spider-Man run, and artist Humberto Ramos — a longtime Amazing Spider-Man penciller — reunited to handle the main story, with Christos Gage co-writing backup chapters and Javier Rodriguez, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Ramon Perez, Peter David, Will Sliney, Chris Yost, and David Baldeon contributing additional short stories. Senior editor Stephen Wacker championed the issue as the beginning of a long-term Spidey epic, and Marvel released it as part of the All-New Marvel NOW! initiative in April 2014. The issue was produced as a deliberately oversized package — 81 pages — to convey the scope of Peter's return and to pre-seed multiple ongoing plotlines simultaneously, a publishing strategy that generated extensive pre-release variant cover orders and collector attention.
