Tom DeFalco had returned to Amazing Spider-Man as writer with issue #407 (January 1996), stepping back onto the flagship title after his resignation as Marvel Editor-in-Chief and a stint on Spectacular Spider-Man. Issue #414 was produced during the winding-down phase of the Clone Saga — a sprawling multi-title event that had run from October 1994 — with DeFalco and artist Mark Bagley collaborating just weeks before Bagley's long tenure on the book ended. Editor Ralph Macchio oversaw the issue under Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras. DeFalco had originally created the Rose character during his earlier 1980s run on Amazing Spider-Man, making his reinvention of that villain's identity here a personal creative callback.
