The Amazing Spider-Man #378

History

Maximum Carnage was conceived by Spider-Man group editor Danny Fingeroth roughly a year after Carnage's explosive debut, capitalizing on the character's unexpected popularity — which, according to participants, initially outpaced even Venom's launch. The event was plotted across a hotel conference room brainstorm involving writers Tom DeFalco, David Michelinie, J.M. DeMatteis, and Terry Kavanagh, with Michelinie handling all three Amazing Spider-Man installments (#378–380) alongside his longtime artistic collaborator Mark Bagley — the same team that had originally created Carnage. Michelinie himself later acknowledged in interviews that crossover events were not his preferred format, as they constrained his ability to focus on Peter Parker's character, yet his chapters — including #378 — are regarded as among the strongest in the arc. The title 'Maximum Carnage' and the character name 'Carnage' itself were both coined by Spider-Man group editor Eric Fein.
