Writer David Michelinie, who had already co-created Venom in Amazing Spider-Man #298 (1988), developed Carnage as a deliberate escalation of that concept — not a replacement for Eddie Brock, but something categorically more violent. According to Wikipedia's Carnage character entry, the character was originally conceived under the name 'Chaos' until a different publisher released a character with that name, and Stan Lee also had input in pushing for a villain darker and more vicious than Venom. Mark Bagley, who had stepped onto the title in 1991 when Erik Larsen departed, designed the character visually, though the first published artwork of Carnage was actually penciled by Chris Marrinan in an earlier cameo issue. Editor Danny Fingeroth oversaw the issue, with Tom DeFalco serving as editor-in-chief; the story was inked by Randy Emberlin and colored by Bob Sharen.
