Jeff Lemire's post-apocalyptic series takes a striking turn with this May 2011 issue, whose cover assembles a haunting tableau of hybrid children — a pig-nosed girl and a wide-eyed, blue-eyed blonde clutching a small skull — framed against a U.S. map blanketed in red biohazard symbols. Above them, reflected in a circular mirror, a woman struggles desperately amid unseen chaos, while skulls and ominous balloons loom in the background. With interior art contributions from Nate Powell, Emi Lenox, and Matt Kindt alongside Lemire himself, "Endangered Species Prelude: Lost Trails" promises a visually rich and genuinely unsettling chapter in this Vertigo series.
