Superman Adventures launched in November 1996 as DC's companion series to Superman: The Animated Series, following the commercial and critical template established by The Batman Adventures tie-in to Batman: The Animated Series. Paul Dini — a writer on the animated show itself — scripted the debut issue, after which Scott McCloud, already celebrated for his theoretical work Understanding Comics, took over the writing reins from issue #2 through #13. Issue #5, titled 'Balance of Power,' fell squarely within McCloud's opening run and features pencils by Bret Blevins, inks by Terry Austin, and color by Marie Severin, with Rick Burchett contributing the cover; the artistic team worked in the clean, animation-faithful house style that defined the entire Adventures line. DC collected the first ten issues of the series in a 2004 trade paperback (Superman Adventures Vol. 1: Up, Up and Away!), which brought issue #5 and the first Livewire story to a new generation of readers.
