Scott McCloud
1960–
Scott McCloud was born Scott McLeod on June 10, 1960, in the United States. He first made his mark in the 1980s as an independent superhero cartoonist and a vocal advocate for creator’s rights, but he is best known for his groundbreaking non-fiction works about the medium itself. His trilogy of comic-form books—*Understanding Comics* (1993), *Reinventing Comics* (2000), and *Making Comics* (2006)—established him as a leading comics theorist. His signature style combines clear, expressive cartooning with rigorous intellectual exploration, often collaborating with the medium’s history and future rather than a single regular partner. Among his notable co-creations is the long-running series *Zot!*, as well as contributions to *Superman Adventures* and *Batman Adventures*. McCloud has also been a persistent advocate for digital tools in comics creation and distribution. His career spans from 1979 into the 2020s, with credits across 91 issues as artist, writer, colorist, inker, and letterer. He has received multiple industry awards for his theoretical work, cementing his legacy as both a practitioner and a profound analyst of the art form.
