“Brainiac, Chapter One”
About this Collection

This collection brings together the complete Superman '78 series, a love letter to the Christopher Reeve era that imagines a new adventure for the Man of Steel set in the world of the classic 1978 film. Writer Robert Venditti and artist Wilfredo Torres pit Superman against the cosmic menace Brainiac, while also exploring Clark Kent's relationships with Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and the supporting cast of Metropolis. The story captures the spirit and tone of the original movie, blending Silver Age-inspired sci-fi with the heartfelt character dynamics fans remember from the screen.

In "Brainiac, Chapter One," Superman faces off against the relentless alien conqueror in a battle that pushes both hero and villain to their limits. As Brainiac’s armor fails and his skull ship collapses, Superman must act fast to save Metropolis—and the bottled cities—before the city’s descent becomes catastrophic. With Wilfredo Torres’ dynamic art and Jordie Bellaire’s vivid colors bringing the chaos to life, this gripping chapter sets the stage for what comes next, all while Clark finds a quiet moment to reconnect with his family, still safe but smaller than ever, in the Fortress of Solitude.

Superman's fight with Brainiac overloads the villain's armor. After Superman evacuates the bottled cities, Brainiac transfers his consciousness to a new body just before his skull ship explodes. No longer levitated by Brainiac's ship, Metropolis begins to fall back to Earth, but Superman slows its descent enough to save all its inhabitants. In the aftermath, things return to normal at the Daily Planet, though Clark's lunch with Lois has to wait until he makes a quick visit to see his folks, kept safe, but still shrunken, back in his fortress.
