Superman #655
Superman stands tall over a frightened young woman trapped in the rubble, fist raised and cape billowing, assuring her she's safe — while her desperate cries warn him that something called "Subjekt 17" is still loose and no one is out of danger. Carlos Pacheco and Jesús Merino's cover crackles with that tension between heroic confidence and lurking dread, making the tagline "What is the Secret of Subjekt 17?" feel genuinely ominous. Kurt Busiek's 2006 run on Superman was hitting its stride, and this issue looks like a compelling reason why.

In 1659, Arion the immortal has a vision of Camelot falling. His crystal ball shows events in the future leading to it. Clark Kent is traveling to Kazakhstan to meet Dr. Callie Llewellyn, a friend. The area around an old Soviet Science Center is devastated, with people dead or injured. Superman helps the injured, but is punched by something very fast, drawing blood. The center was abandoned when the Soviet Union collapsed, but left an experiment with creature Subjekt-17. Superman is attacked again and Arion observes this. He remarks about people tampering, and journeys to his future to fix it.
