The cover of this January 1958 DC issue presents a striking scene: Superman lies motionless on the floor while a standing figure in an orange suit declares his heart has stopped, and a shocked henchman reports that the Man of Steel has finally fallen to magnified Kryptonite rays — all rendered with crisp, dynamic linework by cover penciler Curt Swan and inker Stan Kaye. The glowing green Kryptonite device and its web of yellow energy beams make for a genuinely unsettling tableau, even at that cheerful 10-cent price point.
