“Superior Spider-Man, No More”
About this Issue

Superior Spider-Man (vol. 3) #8 is the final chapter of Dan Slott's third and most personal Superior Spider-Man run, bringing a decade-long creative arc to a close with the same penciller — Mark Bagley — who had been drawing the story since it relaunched. The issue resolves the series' central tension by having Otto Octavius voluntarily erase his own memories of being the Superior Spider-Man a second time, a narrative full-circle that comments on identity, redemption, and the cost of villainy more sharply than a straightforward defeat would. Its cover is a deliberate homage to Amazing Spider-Man #50 — John Romita Sr.'s 'Spider-Man No More!' image — making the thematic callback explicit: just as Peter Parker once walked away from the mask, here Otto is stripped of the very memories that made him the Superior Spider-Man. The issue also closes the Supernova/Estrella Lopez thread introduced in the preceding one-shot and wraps up the 'Superior Spider-Island' hive-mind escalation, cementing the arc as a self-contained coda to the original 2013–2014 body-swap saga.

History

The 2023 Superior Spider-Man series was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, timed to the tenth anniversary of the original storyline, with Dan Slott returning to write and Mark Bagley — his collaborator on the concurrent Spider-Man (2022–23) series — on art. A prelude one-shot, Superior Spider-Man Returns (October 2023, written by Christos Gage from a Slott story, with art by Bagley plus returning alumni Ryan Stegman, Humberto Ramos, and Giuseppe Camuncoli), introduced Supernova/Estrella Lopez and set the stage for the eight-issue ongoing that ran from November 2023 through June 2024. Marvel planned the series as a finite eight-issue run from the outset, after which it was announced that the Spider-Man: Octo-Girl spin-off by Hideyuki Furuhashi and Betten Court would continue Otto's story.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Released June 26, 2024 (cover-dated August 2024); written by Dan Slott, pencilled by Mark Bagley, inked by John Dell, colored by Edgar Delgado, lettered by VC Joe Caramagna, edited by Elizabeth Pyle.
  • Final issue (issue #8 of 8) of Superior Spider-Man vol. 3, concluding the 2023–2024 series; the third volume was confirmed to have ended with this issue.
  • The cover by Mark Bagley is a homage to Amazing Spider-Man #50 (1967) — the classic 'Spider-Man No More!' image — mirroring the series' theme of Otto Octavius being stripped of his Superior Spider-Man identity.
  • Otto's resolution is to use a neurolitic brain scanner to reverse the Spiders-Man-powered hive-mind infection spreading through New York City, but the process also erases his memories of his entire time as the Superior Spider-Man, returning him to a blank-slate status quo.
  • Characters wearing full-face masks — including Spider-Man, the Looter (Norton Fester), and 8-Ball (Jeff Hagees) — are the heroes who resist the Spiders-Man hive-mind infection, because the spiders cannot penetrate their masks, a plot point that gives the story's minor rogues an unexpected narrative function.
  • Supernova (Estrella Lopez), the living-star villain introduced in Superior Spider-Man Returns #1 as a creation of Otto's Superior Spider-Man era, stands down at the end of the issue because Otto no longer remembers imprisoning her, making revenge meaningless.
  • The issue is collected in the trade paperback Superior Spider-Man Vol. 2: Superior Spider-Island (ISBN 9781302955946), which collects issues #5–8 of the 2023 series.
  • A fourth volume of Superior Spider-Man was subsequently announced in December 2025, indicating the character's story continued beyond this concluding issue.
