Spider-Man 2099 was created by writer Peter David and artist Rick Leonardi for Marvel's 2099 imprint, an editorial line overseen by editor Joey Cavalieri that imagined a cyberpunk-dystopian future dominated by corrupt megacorporations. The imprint launched in 1992 and was originally conceived as a line called 'Marvel 2093' before landing on the 2099 branding; Spider-Man 2099 was its flagship title and its most consistently popular book. By issue #5 — on sale January 5, 1993, with a March 1993 cover date — the creative team of David, Leonardi, inker Al Williamson, colorist Noelle Giddings, and letterer Rick Parker was firmly established and operating at full momentum, with the book serving as the narrative spine around which the broader 2099 universe was being constructed.
