Spider-Man 2099 #11
Spider-Man 2099 #11 is the first appearance of two characters whose narrative shadows stretch far beyond their debut issue: Thanatos, an alternate-universe version of Rick Jones driven mad by unchecked access to the Destiny Force, and Dr. Jordan Boone, the Alchemax scientist who will ultimately become Loki — and then Halloween Jack — across the wider Marvel 2099 line. The issue was written by Peter David and penciled by Rick Leonardi, the series' founding creative team, with inks by Al Williamson, colors by Kevin Tinsley, letters by Rick Parker, and editorial oversight from Joey Cavalieri and Tom DeFalco. It was released with a cover date of September 1993 (on-sale July 6, 1993) under the ongoing Marvel 2099 imprint, a line David and Leonardi had launched in late 1992 as a dystopian, cyberpunk reimagining of the Marvel Universe set a century in the future. The issue's story title, 'State of S.I.E.G.E.,' announced the antagonist's acronym playfully, a signature David touch, while the cliffhanger cameo of Thanatos — glimpsed only as an armored, Greek-helmeted figure aboard a hovership marked with an omega symbol — deliberately withheld the character's true identity, a mystery Peter David would not resolve until he returned to the thread nearly a decade later in his Captain Marvel series.
