Spider-Girl #5 is the penultimate chapter in the five-issue Doctor Tramma story arc — the narrative climax that forces Makawalu Akana to confront what kind of hero she is willing to be when another person's life hangs in the balance. As the fifth issue of Maka's debut solo series, it marks the first time this new Hawaiian mutant Spider-Girl operates side-by-side with the original Spider-Man (Peter Parker), a generational passing-of-the-torch moment that anchors her squarely within the main Spider-legacy. The issue also gives substantial page time to Hijack (David Bond), a mutant technopath who had been largely absent from Marvel publishing since Invincible Iron Man (2016), signaling the series' commitment to rehabilitating overlooked corners of the Marvel catalog. Thematically, the 'power vs. responsibility' tagline is not window dressing — Grønbekk uses the drone-heist plot to dramatize that classic Spider-Man moral question from the perspective of a former villain who is still earning her heroic credentials.

History

The series spun directly out of Dan Slott and Michael Cho's Spider-Boy run, where Makawalu 'Maka' Akana debuted in Spider-Boy #11 (2024) and took the Spider-Girl name in issue #12. Norwegian writer Torunn Grønbekk — who had previously worked on Thor, Venom, and Carnage for Marvel — was handed the solo launch, pairing with series artist André Risso; Diógenes Neves joined as a co-penciller from issue #5 onward, as reflected in the shared art credit on this issue. Editor Kaitlyn Lindtvedt and Executive Editor Nick Lowe shepherded the book, which ran for a complete seven-issue story under Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski. The entire run was subsequently collected in the trade paperback Spider-Girl: Breathe Through the Fire.

Doctor Tramma manipulates Hijack into infiltrating Rand Enterprises and stealing an advanced military drone; when Hijack resists, Tramma threatens to use Maka as a substitute, exploiting her power-copying mutation.
Rogue (Anna Marie) appears in cameo capacity — consistent with the series' ongoing thread linking Maka's uncontrollable power-copying to Rogue's own history of permanently absorbing Ms. Marvel's abilities.
