About this Issue

Spider-Boy #8 delivers the first appearance of Puzzle Man, the latest addition to Bailey Briggs's deliberately absurdist rogues gallery — a gallery that writer Dan Slott built from scratch to give Marvel's newest young hero a genuinely original corner of the universe. More significantly, the issue closes out the Madame Monstrosity arc's aftermath and pivots the entire series toward its next phase: the arrival of Madame Web (Julia Carpenter), Silk, and Araña marks the moment Spider-Boy is formally folded into the Spider-Verse's metaphysical infrastructure, setting the table for his multiverse-spanning misadventures in issues #9 and beyond. Coming at the series' midpoint — issue eight of a twenty-issue run — it functions as a true hinge, shifting Bailey's story from street-level solo adventures into the broader web of Spider-mythology.

History

Spider-Boy as a character was co-created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, debuting in Spider-Man vol. 4 #7 (April 2023) before spinning into his own solo series in November 2023. Slott has noted he seized on the 'Spider-Boy' name once he determined Marvel could legally use it on Earth-616 — the amalgam character Peter Ross had previously been jointly owned with DC Comics, which had kept the name off-limits. By issue #8, the creative team on the interior had transitioned from launch artist Paco Medina to Jason Loo and Ty Templeton sharing penciling and inking duties, with Erick Arciniega continuing as colorist and VC Joe Caramagna as letterer; Humberto Ramos remained on the cover throughout the run. The series concluded at twenty issues when Slott departed Marvel for DC in 2025.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Puzzle Man, a new puzzle-and-maze-themed villain created for Bailey Briggs's personal rogues gallery.
  • Written by Dan Slott with interior art by Jason Loo and Ty Templeton; cover by Humberto Ramos; colors by Erick Arciniega; letters by VC Joe Caramagna. Published June 12, 2024.
  • After defeating Puzzle Man, Bailey Briggs is approached by Madame Web (Julia Carpenter), Silk (Cindy Moon), and Araña (Anya Corazón), who offer to help restore the Marvel Universe's erased memories of him — a plot thread that directly launches the Spider-Verse-hopping arc beginning in issue #9.
  • The large cast of cataloged Spider-characters — including Ghost-Spider (Gwen Stacy), Spider-Ham (Peter Porker), Spider-Punk (Hobie Brown), Web-Weaver (Cooper Coen), SP//dr (Peni Parker), Silk (Cindy Moon), Scarlet Spider, and others — reflects the issue's role as a bridge into the Spider-Society storyline, with many appearing in flashback, recap, or connective-tissue context.
  • The Ty Templeton backup strip continues the comedic short-story tradition established in earlier issues of the series (such as the 'Balloonacy' story featuring Squirrel Girl and Tippy-Toe), accounting for the broad array of supporting characters indexed for the issue.
  • Bailey Briggs's core supporting cast — Christina Xu, Tabitha Briggs (his mother, transformed into a Humanimal), Eli Hartman/Hellifino, Boy-Spider, and Madame Monstrosity (Dr. Melodia Stillwell) — had all been established in earlier issues of the 2023–2025 series, with this issue serving as a narrative checkpoint before the multiverse arc.
  • The series was published under Marvel's standard T+ rating and ran for a total of twenty issues (November 2023 – August 2025), with Slott concluding it upon his departure to DC Comics.
  • Three variant covers were offered for this issue: the standard Humberto Ramos cover, a Skottie Young 'Big Marvels' variant, a Skottie Young 1:50 Black-and-White Virgin variant, and a Nic Klein Stormbreakers variant.
