“The Boy Without Fear, Chapter 1: The Devil's Due”
About this Issue

Spider-Boy #12 marks the first full, costumed appearance of an all-new Spider-Girl in the Earth-616 continuity — a character whose stated purpose within the narrative is to pose questions that challenge the entire Spider-Family mythos, much as Spider-Boy himself did when he debuted. The issue also pivots Bailey Briggs into a meaningful partnership with Daredevil, reframing the 'Boy Without Fear' angle that has run beneath the surface of his training history since his earliest appearances. Coming at the one-year mark of the ongoing series, the issue serves as a structural reset: with the world now remembering Spider-Boy and his mother Tabitha restored to his life, the arrival of a mysterious new Spider-Girl instantly complicates that hard-won stability. Creatively, the issue represents Dan Slott deliberately replicating the slow-burn mystery-character strategy he used with Bailey himself — seeding a new character whose backstory is designed to outlast a single arc.

History

The new Spider-Girl's debut was formally announced by Dan Slott at the Diamond Retailer Lunch at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, where Marvel used it as one of two major character announcements alongside a new Deadpool. Slott and designer/artist Michael Cho developed the character's look and concept together, with series penciller Paco Medina handling the actual on-page storytelling duties in the issue. The Spider-Boy ongoing series itself had launched in November 2023, spinning directly out of Slott and Mark Bagley's Spider-Man run and the 'End of the Spider-Verse' arc, with Paco Medina as series artist and Humberto Ramos — Spider-Boy's co-creator alongside Slott — providing early cover work.
