An Earth task force is dispatched to explore a strange planet and encounters the hostile alien race of Graekus, who inform them that their civilization has been displaced into an alien orbit and their universal power is disappearing. The explorers discover titanium deposits in mountain caves but face attacks from armored creatures and must prepare to land on the planet. Jon Valyon is selected by the Planetary Council as a scout explorer for the Alpha Centauri system, and after saying goodbye to his wife, he blasts off into space where he encounters meteor showers, equipment failures, and other hazards during his intrepid voyage.
