“The Jilting of Superman”

From 1957 comes this delightful DC Showcase spotlight on Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane, with cover art penciled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. The cover presents a wonderfully tense scene: Superman looks on with alarm as a pink chest — "The Forbidden Box from Krypton!" — bursts open, releasing three glowing, disembodied super-powers that streak toward a startled Lois, who backs away clutching a small key. The cover's own caption warns that Lois's curiosity in opening that chest has unleashed three super-powers which may doom the world, making this ten-cent issue a genuinely irresistible snapshot of Silver Age DC storytelling at its most imaginative.
