“Cry... Mandrill!”

This June 1973 issue delivers one of Shanna's most visually arresting covers, with the She-Devil throwing herself atop a charging rhinoceros through city streets, desperately trying to stop the beast from reaching the fleeing crowds — even at the cost of her own life. Her leopard companion races alongside her, while an inset portrait of the fearsome, colorfully-faced Mandrill looms in warning, and a smaller vignette of Shanna brandishing a weapon anchors the upper corner. Cover art by John Romita frames the whole chaotic scene with real energy, and with a creative team inside including Steve Gerber and Ross Andru, this is a worthy entry in one of Marvel's most distinctive series of the era.
