Shanna, the She-Devil #3
The cover of this April 1973 Marvel issue puts Shanna squarely in the middle of a harrowing arena ordeal — she's on her back, crumbling ground beneath her, desperately gripping the horn of a massive charging bull while flames erupt all around and a crowd of onlookers watches from the background. A second Shanna figure appears in the upper corner, knife in hand, while a horned figure falls dramatically to one side, and the cover's speech bubbles — "But if I fall — I'll DIE!" — make the stakes unmistakably clear. John Buscema's pencils and Joe Sinnott's inks give the scene real kinetic energy, and with Carole Seuling writing and Ross Andru on interior art, "The Moon of the Fear-Bulls!" promises a wild, confident adventure for one of Marvel's most distinctive heroines.
