“The Bog Trap”

In "The Bog Trap," Max’s wild claim to turn $50 into half a million lands him a modest $12.50 from a group of eager crooks, who quickly turn on each other over a treasure map bought from Piker—the eighth fake he’s sold that day. When Max’s boss, Sargon, sees the map, he’s quick to recognize the scam, but the real danger lies in the chaos the map has already unleashed. Art by Irwin Hasen, with cover by Harry Peter.

Max tries to borrow fifty dollars from his boss, Sargon, claiming he can turn it into half a million. Sargon refuses, but a number of crooks overhear his claim and give him $12.50 apiece. Max goes to Piker, the rare map dealer and buys a treasure map. This is the eighth such phony map Piker has sold this day. The crooks turn on themselves, each trying to get the map for themselves. When Sargon sees the map he confirms his suspicions that it is a scam.
