Not knowing of Toughy's role as one of the Blue Boys, when he returns home with a shiner she thinks he has been roughhousing with Tommy and Tubby again (he has, but not in the way she thinks). She makes him change into gentlemanly clothes and keep away from rough situations. In the park, he overhears crooks planning to rob Anderson's Grocery Store at closing time. Tommy and Tubby, as Blue Boys, foil the robbery, and Toughy helps. When he returns with a second shiner his mother tells him she is proud of his role in preventing the robbery.
