“Way Dark”

Part of DC's sweeping 1999 "No Man's Land" crossover, this issue drops Robin and Nightwing right into the rubble of a shattered Gotham — visible on the cover as the two heroes scramble through debris beneath a "Welcome to Gotham City" sign that's been savagely spray-painted over to read "DEATH CITY." Jason Pearson's cover work is sharp and kinetic, framing the city's collapse with barbed wire and broken architecture that make the danger feel immediate. Writer Chuck Dixon, with art by Staz Johnson and inks by Stan Woch, brings "Way Dark" to a Gotham that looks every bit as grim as its new name suggests.
