About this Collection

Rex Libris Volume 2: Book Of Monsters continues the adventures of the titular librarian, a powerful and immortal being who works at the Middleton Public Library. This collection follows Rex as he deals with supernatural threats, including a monstrous book that poses a danger to the world, blending humor, action, and metafictional commentary on the nature of libraries and knowledge. Written and illustrated by James Turner, this volume collects issues from the ongoing series published by Slave Labor Graphics.

"Book of Monsters" delivers a delightfully surreal dive into Rex Libris’s mythic past, with James Turner handling every aspect of the story and art—writing, drawing, inking, and lettering with a distinctive, handcrafted flair. As Rex grapples with the paradox of his ancient age and the compressed timeline of his comic, a dreamlike tale unfolds: Simon recounts a bizarre adventure involving a giant rooster and ox transformed by H.G. Wells’ infamous formula, all while hinting at a past romance with Flavia that never was. The cover by James Turner complements the story’s offbeat tone, capturing the eerie charm of a world where books bleed into reality.

As Rex ponders the problem of characters from books escaping into the real world, Circe notes Rex is 2000+ years old yet in two years his comic book has covered about 7 days of his life. Rex offers more of his backstory to Barry, but Barry asks him to streamline his life. Simon interrupts their meeting to tell a story about a time he and Rex battled a giant rooster and ox which were transformed by H.G. Wells' Food of the Gods. In Simon's story, he's more impressive than Rex and steals Rex's lover Flavia. Rex awakens from the story to learn it was all a dream and Flavia is still with him.
