James Turner’s Rex Libris (2007–2009, Slave Labor) is a delightfully eccentric two-issue series following the adventures of its titular librarian—a bespectacled, immortal bibliophile who wages war against ignorance and overdue books with wit and weaponry. Turner both writes and illustrates this cult oddity, blending dry humor with surreal, pulp-inspired action as the library’s head librarian contends with everything from intergalactic threats to overdue fines. Though brief, its clever premise and Turner’s distinctive art make it a memorable footnote in indie comics.
