Preacher #9 (December 1995) pulls back the curtain with the story "When the Story Began," and Glenn Fabry's cover sets an unsettling, deeply Southern Gothic mood. A gaunt, hollow-eyed woman sits in a wheelchair at the center — flanked by a muscular man cradling a submachine gun and a leering figure clutching a large knife — while two somber young boys stand on either side, a crucifix looming on the wall behind the group. Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Vertigo series was already establishing itself as one of 1995's most daring reads, and this issue's atmosphere of dread and dark family dynamics promises another compelling chapter.
