Glenn Fabry's painted cover for issue #8 sets an ominous Southern Gothic mood, dominated by a longhorn cattle skull bearing the banner "Angelville" — crossbones dangling beneath it — while a foreboding plantation house looms in the twilight behind. A wary blonde woman occupies the foreground, with a dark-haired man in a clerical collar watching guardedly over her shoulder. Written by Garth Ennis with art by Steve Dillon, this November 1995 Vertigo installment promises the kind of brooding, atmospheric storytelling the series does so well.
