Glenn Fabry's cover for this December 1997 Vertigo installment sets an unsettling tone immediately — a pale-eyed figure in clerical collar sits coiled within the crushing grip of an enormous serpent, its fanged head rearing upward while a shadowy cross loomed with skulls dominates the blood-red background. The image feels almost biblical in its menace, perfectly suited to a story titled "Snakes in the Grass." Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon were at the height of their Preacher run here, and this issue promises the kind of Southern Gothic unease the series delivered so reliably.
