“Chop Shop”

"Chop Shop" kicks off with Dr. Whitney realizing his car has been stolen and taken to McGruder's Garage—only to be knocked out upon arrival. When he wakes, the vehicle has been altered, prompting a police investigation led by Det. Sgt. Quinn. As Quinn presses McGruder for answers, a mysterious visitor named Landon arrives, and a hidden desk drawer reveals suspicious gas coupons that could be the key to the case. Written by Gaylord Du Bois, this 1945 thriller from Popular Comics #107 delivers a tense, tightly plotted mystery with a classic pulp edge.

Based on what Dr West says, Dr Whitney realizes his car's been stolen and taken to McGruder's Garage. He finds it there, so he is sapped. On waking he enlists a cop, but his car has been changed by now. Det. Sgt. Quinn takes charge, and they go to McGruder's. Landon, whom McGruder phoned to pick up the car he wanted, shows up. Quinn asks if he has a priority certificate to buy a 1942 car, pressing McGruder to allow inspection of the car for fingerprints. McGruder blusters and opens a desk drawer. Quinn plugs him, and finds likely incriminating gas coupons (stolen? counterfeit?) in the drawer.
