“"I'm Still Alive!"”

In "I'm Still Alive!" from Our Army at War #209, Sgt. Mal Walker grapples with the weight of leadership after his commander’s death, taking up the man’s boots as a symbol of duty. Written by Howard Liss and illustrated by Fred Ray, this poignant story follows Walker’s journey from doubt to determination, as he learns that stepping into another’s shoes—both literally and figuratively—doesn’t mean replacing them, but honoring them in his own way. The cover by Joe Kubert captures the moment with quiet intensity, a hallmark of the era’s grounded war storytelling.
