My Own Romance #5
In "Peril from the Past?", May’s quiet life takes a dramatic turn when her past resurfaces in the form of a long-buried secret that threatens her present. Written with emotional depth and drawn with care by Pete Tumlinson, inks by Mike Esposito, this 1949 tale explores love, sacrifice, and the weight of choices made decades earlier—set against the backdrop of a modest life built on hard-won dignity.

May grows up in poverty, with an invalid father and over-worked mother. She gets a job in a department store and is sexually harassed by her supervisor Sam, but falls in love with wealthy Ronald. Ronald’s father offers May $10,000 to drop her son, and threatens to cut him off from his inheritance if she doesn’t. For Ronald’s sake, May agrees, using the money to buy her parents a house and for her father’s medical treatment. Ronald learns the truth and weds May anyway. 22 years later, they’re still married and have a son.
