Pete Tumlinson
Howard Peter Tumlinson, known as Pete Tumlinson, was born on June 7, 1920, and died on June 5, 2008. An American comic book artist and book illustrator, he is best remembered for his work during the late 1940s through the 1950s for Timely Comics and Atlas Comics, the forerunners of Marvel. His most significant contribution was illustrating the early adventures of the Western hero Kid Colt, a character he helped define across numerous issues. Tumlinson’s style was clean and straightforward, suited to the action-packed, rugged landscapes of the genre. He collaborated primarily with writers and editors at the Atlas bullpen, though specific creative partners are not widely documented. Beyond Kid Colt, his credits include work on *Wild Western*, *Secrets of the Unknown*, *Two Gun Western*, and *Sheriff Classics*, with a career spanning from 1949 to 1988 across 76 issues. Later in life, he moved into book illustration. While not a household name, Tumlinson’s steady output helped sustain the Western comic tradition during its peak popularity. His legacy is that of a reliable craftsman who contributed to the foundation of Marvel’s early genre storytelling. No major awards are recorded for his work.
