When ambitious understudy Choo Choo hears about a lucrative quiz show prize, she sees her ticket to the leading role in "Ashes of Passion"—all she needs is the hundred and fifty dollars her director demands to swap her out of the maid role. After a frantic scramble involving waitressing, radio contests, and a runaway vacuum cleaner, Choo Choo manages to secure the cash and claim her place as the show's star. But when opening night arrives, both she and the displaced leading lady take the stage at once, turning the theatrical performance into complete backstage chaos.

Two ambitious young racers, Ezra J. Jones and Rollo, team up to win a dog-cart competition sponsored by Palsie Dog Biscuits—complete with a shiny Putmobile as first prize. But their rivals, especially the scheming Fuzzy, keep throwing obstacles in their path, and Rollo's "helpful" shortcuts prove more hindrance than help as the race takes them through treacherous terrain and past a series of dirty tricks.
