“The Tarnished Hero!”

In "The Tarnished Hero!", the town of Millford prepares to honor its war hero, Robert Green, with a statue—unaware that the monument stands atop a fountain hiding the stolen jewels from a recent robbery. As the townspeople celebrate, unseen forces begin to spread whispers that cast doubt on Green’s heroic past. Penciled and inked by Kurt Schaffenberger, this 1949 issue captures the quiet tension of a community’s trust being tested, all beneath the shadow of a statue meant to immortalize a man whose legacy may not be as clean as it seems.
