“The Magic Umbrella”

This August 1949 Fawcett anthology packs 52 pages of adventure, with Kurt Schaffenberger's cover setting a wonderfully chaotic scene: Captain Marvel Jr. lunges through a rainstorm, gripping a mysterious oversized umbrella while a cackling villain dangles what appears to be a necklace just out of reach, as startled bystanders and an amused onlooker watch the mayhem unfold on a city street. The cover story, "The Magic Umbrella," promises exactly the kind of inventive, lighthearted mischief that made Fawcett's heroes so appealing in 1949. Rounding out the lineup are Nyoka, Tom Mix, and Bulletman — a genuine variety show of action under one cover.
