History

Writer Gerry Conway scripted the issue with pencils by Ross Andru and inks by Frank Bolle, under editor Roy Thomas — the same core creative team steering the title through its early Bronze Age run. The series had only just converted from bimonthly to monthly publication with issue #8, and that newly consistent schedule gave Conway the room to attempt his first extended arc in the title. The cover was rendered by John Romita Sr. and inked by Joe Sinnott, and the Iron Man logo art on that cover was recycled from 1960s Jack Kirby artwork originally produced for the Mighty Marvel Marching Society fan-club stationery — a behind-the-scenes curiosity confirmed by the Marvel Database. Romita's cover image of Iron Man was later reused as the cover logo art for Iron Man #89, giving the piece an unexpectedly long shelf life.

Zarrko the Tomorrow Man (Artur Zarrko), created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Jack Kirby, and Dick Ayers, first appeared in Journey Into Mystery #86 (Nov. 1962) and was last seen in Journey Into Mystery #101–102 (1964) before this issue — a gap of nearly nine years. The comic's own text erroneously cites 'Thor #102,' a title that did not exist; the correct reference is Journey Into Mystery #102.
Cameo appearances by a large portion of the Avengers roster — Black Panther, Captain America, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Thor, Vision, and Edwin Jarvis — all shown as Kang's captives; Harry Osborn also cameos in a scene that reflects his concurrent deteriorating mental state in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man.
The Iron Man logo on the cover repurposes 1960s Jack Kirby artwork originally created for Mighty Marvel Marching Society fan-club stationery; the same Romita cover image was later adapted as the trade dress logo on Iron Man #89.
