About this Collection

This volume of Marvel Masterworks collects the early adventures of Earth's Mightiest Heroes from the mid-1960s, featuring the expanded roster that includes Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and the Scarlet Witch alongside founding members Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and the Wasp. The team faces threats such as the Enchantress and the Executioner, the Living Laser, Power Man, and the Swordsman, with key storylines exploring the dynamics of the newly formed lineup and the growing tensions among the heroes. This hardcover edition reprints issues from the Silver Age, showcasing the classic storytelling and artwork that defined the era.

In "Let Sleeping Dragons Lie!", Quicksilver’s desperate escape from Magneto sets off a chain of events that brings the Avengers into a clash with a newly empowered Dane Whitman, the heir to the Black Knight mantle. As Whitman grapples with memories of his uncle’s demise, the Avengers—unaware of his true allegiance—move to stop him, while in Olympus, Hercules discovers the gods have vanished and the Promethean Flame is gone. Written by Roy Thomas and illustrated with dynamic precision by George Tuska, this 2005 Marvel Masterworks entry blends personal legacy with cosmic mystery, all under a striking cover by George Tuska.

Quicksilver escapes from Magneto long enough to alert the Avengers, but he is recaptured. Dane Whitman recalls the death of his uncle, the villainous Black Knight, as he prepares to become the new Black Knight to fight Magneto himself. But when he meets the Avengers, they attack him, not knowing that this new Black Knight is on their side. Meanwhile, in Olympus, Hercules finds that the gods are missing and the Promethean Flame has been extinguished.
